Passage Raises $4 Million to Help Developers Bring Biometric Authentication to More People | Texas News

AUSTIN, TX, February 1, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Passage, an innovator in the rapidly growing passwordless identity space, emerged from stealth today announcing the availability of its audience beta with $4 million new funding led by LiveOak Venture Partners with participation from Next Coast Ventures, Tau Ventures, Secure Octane and various angel investors. Passage takes a developer and biometrics-first approach to passwordless authentication, allowing users to log into web apps with Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, and other biometrics built into their devices.

Passage provides full biometric user authentication in a few lines of code

Compared to other forms of user authentication, biometrics provide improved security and a smoother login experience for users. Passwords and magic links introduce friction at critical conversion points in the user journey, but biometrics enable businesses to reduce cart abandonment, user churn, and related support costs to passwords by introducing a fast connection without context switching. Biometrics also protects users by eliminating phishing and account takeover attacks, while protecting businesses from the risks associated with storing and managing passwords.

“Passage provides an exceptional development experience for easier-to-use, more secure technology, and ultimately the future of authentication. There is often a trade-off between security and user experience, but Passage offers a unique combination of both with low implementation complexity,” said Cole Hecht, co-founder and CEO of Passage. “This funding will allow us to introduce Passage to more developers and provide more ‘ah-ha’ moments when people first sign up for websites with Face ID, Touch ID or Windows Hello.”

Consumers are increasingly comfortable with using embedded biometrics to log into mobile applications, especially for banking and other highly sensitive transactions. At the same time, biometrics is barely becoming accessible to developers in the browser, which should create a wave of opportunity and innovation. Passage also brings the consumer experience of biometric authentication to web applications. With a few lines of code, developers can allow their users to register and log in to websites with just their face or fingerprint.

“Passage is poised to fundamentally change the way we interact with the web,” said Creighton Hicks, LiveOak Venture Partners. “Imagine a world where you sign up, log in and pay online seamlessly – no matter what device you’re on, without having to remember or search for your password. A world where breaches of password simply don’t matter because they can’t be used on other sites and the biometric data itself never leaves your device.Passage, backed by the right team and the right technology, enables developers to easily give this experience to their users, and make our world a little easier and safer.”

Passage is built on technology that eliminates passwords and provides two strong authentication factors – something you are and something you have – with one quick swipe. Additionally, Passage does not store any users’ faces, fingerprints, or other biometrics, making it the best solution for businesses and security and privacy-focused users. Anna PoblettsCo-founder and CTO of Passage said, “After decades of passwords and multi-factor requirements, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and we are excited to pave the way for developers who want to implement implement better authentication for their users.

“Passage makes passwordless biometric authentication accessible to all developers and makes the WebAuthn open source standard easy to integrate into any environment,” said Chris Aniszczyk, CTO, Linux Foundation. “Improving security practices should be a priority for everyone, and I strongly encourage all developers to support passwordless authentication in their applications.”

With this funding close, Passage is making its public beta available and inviting developers to start building with Passage here.

Developers can join Passage Community Discord for support, and examples of Passing in popular tech stacks are located on GitHub.

It will expand the platform in the coming months to include support for additional authentication methods, extensibility features, mobile support, and additional guides to help developers get started. She will also use the new capital to expand her team. Interested candidates can apply here.
