The Nothing(1) phone is one of the hottest and most anticipated smartphones right now. Even though the launch is only a few weeks away, some questions about the phone remain unanswered. Ahead of the device’s launch, which kicks off on July 12, here are five questions about the Nothing(1) phone that we still need answers to.
1. What does the front of the phone look like?
Nothing has recently revealed the full look of the Nothing(1) phone from the rear, revealing a unique semi-transparent white back with lightening stripes. However, none of the reveal images, leaked renders, or any other sightings of the Nothing(1) phone reveal what the front of the phone looks like.
The front panel has been kept so secret that we still don’t know if the Nothing(1) phone will feature narrow bezels or a tall chin-bottom. We also still don’t know what kind of notch or punch-hole we’ll see on the device.
2. Which processor will power the phone?
Much of what the Nothing(1) phone has to offer has been touted by Carl Pei and the rest of the Nothing team for months now. Unfortunately, one of the most important aspects of the phone, the processor, has always been kept secret.

Although Nothing revealed early on that the company will be partnering with Qualcomm for the chipset for the first Nothing phone, we still don’t know what processor will be inside the Nothing phone. More importantly, we have no confirmation on whether the chip will even be a flagship Snapdragon 800 series chip or a midrange 700 series chip, as many reports have suggested.
3. Will there be other color variants besides white?
The white variant of the Nothing(1) phone was all over the web this week, but we still don’t know if it will be the only color of the phone. Most smartphones are introduced with multiple color options to appeal to more users. A black variant of the Nothing ear (1), Nothing’s only other product at this point, launched months after the launch of the original white ear (1). Perhaps we could see a similar strategy with the phone (1), with more color options launching later.
4. Will the phone have an in-screen fingerprint sensor or a side sensor?
Since the front of the Nothing (1) phone has yet to be revealed in any promotional material, it’s unclear whether an under-display fingerprint reader will reach the Nothing (1) phone. Most phones today have a fingerprint scanner under the screen or with the power button on the right side of the phone. The company hasn’t confirmed what kind of display technology we’ll see on the device, so it’s unclear what kind of fingerprint sensor the phone will pack at this time.
In the recently revealed design, however, we saw that the phone (1) features flat, metallic sides and buttons, the type of buttons that side-mounted fingerprint sensors are typically seen on.
5. How many years of updates will the phone receive?
Carl Pei showed off the software experience for the Nothing(1) phone in March 2022. The phone will apparently run Android 12 out of the box with a new custom skin called NothingOS. However, we still don’t know what the phone’s update schedule will look like.
While most Android phones from different brands are currently clocking out two years of system and three or four years of security updates, Nothing might stand out by offering longer-term support. But that’s a mystery at the moment and we’ll have to wait a little longer to be sure.
