New OCIR app helps kids with special needs communicate with emojis

For parents of young people with learning disabilities, helping them communicate effectively and understand the world around them without getting overwhelmed is a lifelong task. For Aiesha Bailey, the dyslexic mother of a young boy with learning difficulties, this inspired her to create a new mobile app to facilitate self-expression.

The new application is called OCIR– a backronym which stands for observe, communicate, indicate to respond – and it was designed to benefit youth and adults with anxiety, Asperger’s syndrome, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) ), dyslexia, learning difficulties, speech delays.

OCIR is primarily intended for classrooms, but can be used by parents and caregivers to communicate with anyone with self-expression issues. Its main function is emoji-based communication to help users and teachers, parents or caregivers communicate quickly, but it can also be used as a daily planner and calendar, it can block out background noise and can even be used. used as a coaching tool to help parents better understand the causes of these self-expression problems.

Aiesha initially created the app to help her son Rico, but the idea first took the form of a book before gradually evolving into its current form.

“I designed a book using emojis indicating facial expressions to help my son express himself,” she explains. “Plans for the use of the book were made and they would work for a while, but time constraints and large class sizes would prove difficult to sustain new practices. Things would fall back into old familiar patterns. My son, unable to remember incidents in class at the end of the day, would lose self-confidence and come back to unresolved issues in his dreams, which was distressing for both of us.
