Lufthansa Group – Contactless travel with facial recognition: STAR ALLIANCE BIOMETRICS now also at Hamburg Airport

Improved travel comfort for Lufthansa Group passengers with seamless passage through security and boarding gate

‘Camera on’ is now the motto of Hamburg Airport. After a successful introductory phase, the star alliance facial field biometric recognition system is now officially launched there. With the new service, participating passengers from Austria, SWITZERLAND and Lufthansa will be able to pass security checks and board without contact and quickly. In future, a simple glance will suffice – without a boarding pass or a smartphone.

How it works?

Interested participants of the Miles & More loyalty program must register once at Star Alliance Biometrics at least 24 hours before their next Austrian, Lufthansa or SWISS flight. To do this, they need their valid passport and the latest version of the Lufthansa app or the Miles & More app. As soon as they check in, they can go through the central security check and boarding gates A17 and C16 at Hamburg Airport without touching. Entrances to the gate and expressways of the central security checkpoint are clearly marked. Their face is automatically captured by the camera installed there and compared to your stored image. Travelers can keep their mouth coverings, which they must currently wear in the terminal for the protection of their health. If there is a positive match, the entries open automatically.

Register once, use many times.

The Star Alliance Biometrics platform, on which the technology is based, has already been successfully launched in November 2020 to Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna hubs with the aim of providing passengers with a seamless travel experience. Hamburg Airport is therefore the fourth participating airport. Once checked in, passengers can use biometric access at all participating airports.

The identification solution used in Star Alliance Biometrics is powered by NEC I: Delight facial recognition technology from from Japan NEC Corporation and is available to Miles & More participants who have agreed to the use of their biometric data during the travel process.

Data protection and security

Personal data – such as photos and other identifiers – is encrypted and stored securely on the platform. The system was developed from the outset in compliance with applicable data protection laws and based on the latest facial recognition technology. The storage of personal data is reduced to the minimum necessary. For example, no customer name is stored.

‘We are delighted that LufthansaAustrian and SWISS now also offer star alliance facial recognition to Hamburg Airport,’ said Mirjam Fröhlichresponsible for handling passengers and baggage at Hamburg Airport. “This is a plus in terms of convenience for participating passengers entering the security checkpoint and certain gates. The new technology saves additional time and makes the screening process at central airport points even easier. smoother, which is exactly what our passengers want.

Falk Durmboss of Lufthansa Group Ground and Airport Experienceemphasizes: “In the Lufthansa Group, biometric offers will increasingly simplify and optimize contactless processes in airports and thus significantly improve the travel experience of our passengers. I am pleased that we can now also offer our customers Star Alliance Biometrics in Hamburg after successful start in Frankfurt, Munich and Vienna.’

Vice President of Star Alliance Customer Experience, Christian Dräger added: “We are delighted to extend our state-of-the-art Star Alliance biometrics to Hamburg Airport. We welcome more passengers into the future of air travel inspired by contactless and seamless experiences. We are committed to the cause and are gradually expanding our biometric footprint. We hope to see more member airlines and partner airports adopt the technology in the times to come.
