Prof. Ken Attafuah, Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA), revealed that Ghana Card applicants can complete an online registration form.

According to him, the online platform is created to facilitate the registration exercise, but it is limited, which means that the applicant will still have to go to the regional or district offices or the headquarters of the NIA to complete the registration process.

“You can do it online up to a point. We have to capture your biometrics. So you can go online, make an appointment and fill out a form – basic information – but a lot of the information you it contains are so technical. It’s coded,” he said.

In an interview on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” program, Professor Attafuah explained the reasons why registration cannot be done online only.

He explained that Ghana Card registration requires biometric authentication which cannot be done through an online application.

“It’s a bit complex and complicated but the law requires us to be precise. Then you come to biometrics; with biometrics we have to capture your 10 digits. There is a technique to do that and with our system you Can’t use your cell phone to take a picture of your fingers for us. We have technology to take your eyes that you can’t smack and pass it on to us because you took a selfie.

“As far as your face is concerned, the system is designed in such a way that both of your ears have to be exposed because your ears are your biometrics. Your ears are different from each other and they are different from the ears of any other human being. We want to capture that too in a particular way, so it’s important that you come to us physically to be registered by capturing that biometric data.”

He also said that before the registered person can receive their Ghana card, they will again have to be biometrically verified, which is also impossible to do online.

“The third reason why you can’t apply online is that after you’ve done all of this, we want you to give us permission before we print the card or thumbprint. And when you’re done, we finally have to issue you the card biometrically and when it matches, we give it back to you,” he stressed.
