2023: Deploy biometric device, EU mission urges INEC | The Guardian Nigeria News

The European Union Election Observers Monitoring Mission (EU-EOM) to Nigeria has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the deployment of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter accreditation in the 2023 general election.

The group said: ‘We urge INEC to do a full lesson on the use of BVAS. It should have an independent evaluation of the use of BVAS and should develop a comprehensive plan accordingly…”

Chief Observer, EU EOM, Marie Arena, spoke yesterday at the release of the report on the status of implementation of the 30 recommendations made by the EU EOM after the 2019 general elections.

Meanwhile, the group has also urged the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) to ensure gender inclusion in political party activities.

Arena, spoke when she led a delegation on a courtesy visit to IPAC. She said she met with civil society, government and political parties to provide input for the best design of the 2023 general elections.

IPAC National President Yabagi Sani called on the EU not to relax its commitment to building democracy, good governance, peace and security in Nigeria.

Sani also asked the delegation to help political parties with computer equipment and human capacity training in the use and application of information and communication technologies (ICT).

Furthermore, the EU commended President Buhari for enacting the election bill, saying, “We hope that this time will be well used to try to reduce some of the problems we encountered in the previous elections, with overlapping jurisdictions and conflicting judgments”.

However, the EOM deplored the lack of concrete action regarding women’s political participation following the National Assembly’s rejection of bills aimed at increasing women’s opportunities in politics.

“Without serious action, the potential of Nigerian women is missed. This is not good for women or for parliaments,” the group said:
